South Australia
Located West of Victoria, South Australia stretches around the coastline of the Great Australian Bight and up as far as the Nullarbor Plain and the arid outback of central Australia. The South Australian Coastline is exceptionally beautiful, varying from pristine beaches to high cliff sides.
The marine life of this area is rich and diverse, allowing for activities such as fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and even whale watching tours at Head of Bight during the Southern Right Whale breeding season between May and October.
Off the coast of South Australia is Kangaroo Island, an unspoiled Eden of sand dunes, native bushland and wild fauna and flora. Renowned as one of the most successful sustainable tourism destinations in the world, Kangaroo Island has a wide choice of eco-friendly lodgings and luxury retreats for environmentally minded visitors, as well as wineries and restaurants that serve fresh local produce.
The South Australian capital Adelaide is known as the ‘city of churches’ because of it’s abundance of churches and its early religious settlement history. Adelaide is a livable, relaxed city with beautiful beaches, shopping, eateries, a thriving arts scene and regular live events and festivals such as the Adelaide Fringe Festival. East of the city is the Adelaide Hills, a rural winegrowing region that produces some of Australia’s finest wines, particularly the award-winning Grange variety.
South Australia has no shortage of winegrowing regions, with some of the most renowned including the Barossa Valley, the Riverland (through which the majestic Murray River flows) and Clare Valley to name a few.
